The Shinbone of Saint Eanswide

Saint Eanswide was an Anglo-Saxon princess and nun in the 7th century. Daughter of King Eadbald, she was the founder of Folkestone Abbey in Kent. A pagan King of Northumbria asked her to marry but she rejected his advances because she had chosen an immortal Bridegroom. Eanswide performed many mirables before and after her death, including giving sight to a blind man and casting a demon out of a possessed man. After the destruction of the abbey by the Vikings, the monastic community of Folkestone was moved to a new site in 1137.
