The caclulator above should get you the information that you need with minimal reading. But if you're a reader, we've written a step-by-step guide to figure out what configuration you need to fit your specific paint collection. *Disclaimer: There are a lot of words here to ensure it's thorough, HOWEVER, it's not as crazy as it looks!

If you already think that you will be building your own unit from scratch, head down to the 'BUILD FROM SCRATCH' chart in this section and work your way back up to here. If you aren't sure or you think you want a pre-existing unit, read on!

First, you'll want to determine what size shelves you need based on what paints you have. Using the chart below, you'll find paint brands, and the shelf size that these paints fit on to the left of that row. Find your paints and then look over to the shelf size. Jot down what shelf sizes you will need.

Calculate how many of each shelf you need. Now that you know the shelf sizes you need, you will need to find out how many you need.

There are 2 different sizes of racks: TALL and SHORT (with the exception of Kallax and Billy configurations). Depending on what unit you get, you can get either or both. For example, on the Cave unit you can see that the top section has shorter shelves and the bottom has taller ones. Those are the 2 types!

On the chart below you will notice that, regardless of the rack size, the same amount of paints fit on a shelf horizontally. That's because the shelves are the same exact width. (Which also means that you can take a shelf from a tall rack and move it to a short rack.) The difference is the depth of the shelves, which is what you already figured out above.

Find your paints on the left and look at which type of rack is better for your paint collection. Or do you need a mix of both?

For example, if I had 37 Citadels, I would notice that the Tall Rack would fit my paints more effectively. Because 8 Citadels can fit on a shelf, and I can put 5 shelves on a rack, the Total (8x5) is 40 Citadels on 1 Tall Rack. Where the Short Rack could only fit 32 of my Citadels.

From glancing at the chart, you may realize that Short Racks suit your collection perfectly. Or that Tall Racks do. OR that sometimes a Short Rack works and sometimes a Tall Rack is better. Well, now you understand why there are so many options! :) Whatever your case is, you can take this knowledge and head to the Reward section. You'll see some units with only Short Racks (Badger), and some with only Tall Racks (Cub). Then, you can see the combination of both (Grizzly, Cave). If you like a unit as is, make sure to grab the Bundle option. The Frame is to start from scratch. (If you decide to do that, we included an extra chart below for you to get you started.)

After selecting your Bundle, you'll choose the size shelves that you need (the ones you chose in Step 1). Then you can find additional items in the add-on section to customize your configuration further. These will be added on to your Bundle pack and not replace anything in your Bundle. The add-ons also have fun things like tool and cup holders that can be quickly added to any of the units. Grab anything you want from there, and you'll be good to go!

BUILDING FROM SCRATCH

If you realize that the preconfigured units don't hold what you need, you have the option to build your own unit. Remember, because this system is modular, you can use more than 1 unit and/or modify the above units in the add-on section with storage holders, splitters, etc.

But if you decide to create your own from scratch, you will want to choose a Frame Only Reward. Then you will want to add the proper racks (if you will be storing your items using racks and not other storage add ons). The chart below will help you with this process, and so will the calculators that we've added above all of these charts.

Keep in mind: There are 2 different rack types that fit into units: TALL and SHORT. (The exception to this is a Kallax or Billy bookcase configuration. Then you will need to get those specific racks.) You can see which racks fit into each unit on the far column.
